Did you know many diseases can be discovered through a carefully planned eye exam?

Our diagnostic equipment allows our comprehensive eye exams to detect even the smallest changes in your vision and eye health, which helps us ascertain your risk factors for debilitating eye diseases and whole body diseases. And with early detection, many can be manageable.

General Optical was founded in 1953 to provide the highest quality eye care for the people of Flint and surrounding communities. Since then, we have grown to three locations, serving thousands of satisfied patients throughout Mid-Michigan. We are locally owned and operated, and proud to employ our entire workforce here in Genesee County.

Since taking the reigns in 1971, Jim Moore has continued the Moore family tradition of providing the highest quality eye care products and services available and always at a superior vale. Under Mr. Moore's direction, General Optical has added many new services and technologies with the sole purpose of making your eyewear the very best it can be. Jim Moore is the spokesperson in our television commercials so you might very well recognize Jim when you come into the store.

Astigmatism
You may have astigmatism if you experience a distortion or blurring of images at all distances -- near and far. Headache, fatigue, squinting and eye discomfort or irritation may indicate a slight degree of astigmatism, even if your vision is fairly sharp.

Cataracts
There are a number of signs and symptoms that may indicate a cataract. A comprehensive eye examination can determine for certain if you have a cataract forming.

Double Vision
You may have a condition known as double vision, also referred to as diplopia, if you see two of whatever you are looking at.

Hyperopia
You may be farsighted if you can see objects at a distance clearly but have trouble focusing well on objects close up. Farsightedness is often referred to by its medical names, hypermetropia or hyperopia.

Keratoconus
Deficient vision that cannot be corrected completely with glasses may indicate a condition known as conical cornea or keratoconus. Keratoconus is rare and primarily affects people in their early 20's.

Myopia
You may be near- or shortsighted if you can see objects nearby with no problem, but reading road signs or making out the writing on the board at school is more difficult.

Presbyopia
Presbyopia, a name derived from Greek words meaning "old eye, is a condition recognized when you hold a book up close and the words appear blurred, then push the book farther away, and the words snap back into sharp focus.

Spots & Floaters
If you occasionally see specks or threadlike strands drifting across your field of vision that dart away when you try to look at them, you're seeing what eye care practitioners call spots or floaters.

ARMD
The most common cause of irreversible vision loss for people over the age of 60 is age-related macular degeneration or ARMD. It is estimated that 2.5 million people in developed countries will suffer visual loss from this disorder.

Blepharitis
Sometimes described as "psoriasis of the eyelids", an inflammatory problem called "blepharitis", is characterized by red and irritated eyelid rims. If your eyelids burn and itch or if you've noticed an oily discharge or scaly skin around them, you may have "blepharitis".

Conjunctivitis
You may have conjunctivitis if you experience red, watery eyes, inflamed lids, blurred vision and a sandy or scratchy feeling in the eyes. More commonly known as "pink eye", pus-like or watery discharge around the eyelids may indicate an infectious form of the disease.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that prevents your body from making or using insulin to break down sugar in your bloodstream. It can also affect your eyes and vision.

Dry Eye
If you experience a feeling of something foreign within the eye or general discomfort, you may be experiencing the common signs of "dry eye." A stinging, itching, or burning sensation or general discomfort may also signal dry eye.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma most often strikes people over age 50. The most scary thing about glaucoma is that it can steal your vision gradually and without your noticing. The best defense against glaucoma is a regular eye examination.

Styes
Known in medical terms as an external hordeoluma, small area of redness and pain on the margin of your eyelid may indicate that you have a stye. A stye, or hordeoluma is a blocked gland at the edge of the lid that has become infected by bacteria, usually Staphylococcus.
